FATIGUE OF SHIBUYA
In Japan, it is common to avoid conflict or disagreement in most social confrontations.
Japanese put on a facade called “tatemae” to hide their true feelings, especially within the context of large groups.
“Honne” on the other hand, reflects the true self; the unmasked opinions and feelings.
It is often the direct opposite of what is required according to one’s social position and circumstances.
With this photo series, I got behind the “tatemae” curtain of people in Shibuya, Tokyo to see a glimpse of the genuine nature of “honne”.
