The Nymphs (nymphai) were minor nature goddesses which populated the earth. The Nymphs took care of various natural phenomena - from springs, to clouds, trees, rivers and meadows. They were responsible for the care of the plants and animals.
One day Aphrodite caught Apollo flirting with a shy, beautiful nymph named Paeonia. When Paeonia realized the goddess saw them, her face blushed. In anger, Aphrodite turned the blushing girl into a rose-colored peony. According to Greek mythology, modern gardeners owe thanks to their ancient gods for the peonies.
That’s why peonies symbolise bashfulness.
