L’amour rebelle explores sexuality and conflict by reimagining Georges Bizet’s classic opera Carmen. Here we are introduced to Carmen, played by Roy Joseph Butler. Removed from Bizet’s original portrayal of gender, race and class, this Carmen is a universal figure for the 21st-century. L’amour rebelle is the first-ever live opera on the blockchain. Created by Leo Crane, Merav Eldan and Zachary Whitney, it premiered with a performance in Los Angeles on 29 March 2022.
