My artistic imagination and homage to this holiday.
Traditions of this holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras and aztec marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building ofrendas (altars) filled with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with the items as gifts for the dead. The celebration is not solely focused on the dead though. People give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls. Also, writing light-hearted and often irreverent epitaphs to living friends and acquaintances called calaveras literarias is common.
