The figure of the raven is used as a vehicle to indicate that the origin of this separation is death, which can also be inferred from the subject's own stance, who's in the grip of severe despondency; the hues used to depict his complexion hint at the colors of a person who's now lifeless; the eyes, mouth and hands are surrounded by a bright red that indicates the violent nature of the death, which didn't happen due to natural causes but to an accident.
