In describing her “Picnic 001,” Raquel Meyers writes, “We keep going backwards no matter what,” and she calls it a “decoration for high-resolution screens. A roadside picnic for civil care.” Raquel lives in the Basque Country in Spain, and within this artwork she brings together the industrial heritage of that area, the new dress code for women in Afghanistan, and the mediation of the smartphone. Raquel created the frames of this GIF animation with techniques she developed over years of engaging with vintage computer technologies, specifically Teletext systems and Commodore 64 computers.
