A native of Ocala, Florida, Joey started roller-skating as a way to kill time. Little did he know it would eventually take him around the world. He caught the attention of speedskating coach Rene Hildebrand while spending time at the local roller rink, who coaxed him to join her team. That turned out to be a good decision for both of them. In his first season competing, Joey became National Champion.
