“it’s ok to be alone” is about coming to terms with the fact that I haven’t found “the one” yet, and offering myself some reassurance that it’s okay to walk my own path.
The song has two verses, each inspired by a different relationship.
The first is about a woman I dated in my early twenties, who also inspired the song “Photograph”. Though I cared about her a lot, we weren’t a match. She was very buttoned-up, a big believer in the American Dream (though she never put it that way) and wanted a man to match her vision and traditional upbringing – and I’m not that. The first verse is simply me re-living my experience gaining trust for her, as well as falling in love, as we laid in bed.
