This piece is a tribute to a female artist who influenced the Art Nouveau movement: Frances Macdonald MacNair.
Frances and her sister, Margaret, were Scottish artists who helped define the "Glasgow Style". They were influenced by Celtic imagery, Japanese woodblock prints and natural themes which combined define the distinctive style of Art Nouveau. She and her sister opened their own design firm to produce everything from metalwork to textiles in the 1890s. Frances' work was expressive, colorful and full of story compared to the more muted tones and figural focus of her sister's work.
