Donkey Kong – the name of the ape antagonist – was the first true platform game to ever exist. Just as notable, was the first appearance of Nintendo's 'Mario', then simply known as 'Jump Man' in Japan, and designed by Nintendo's first artist, Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto in fact based the ape, Jump man and Pauline (the love interest) on the characters Popeye, Bluto and Olive Oyl, and Mario was named after Nintendo America's warehouse landlord, a one Mario Segale.
