Masks are worn during rituals and ceremonies, usually shaped after a human face in highly abstract form or animals of the planet. When worn, masks allowed the wearer to conceal self + ego, their identity dissipating as they took on the spirit of the mask worn.
African art historian Chika Okeke-Agula says, “when fully activated, masks become ‘spirits made tangible’.” It was believed mask wearers were able to transcend the physical realm and gain insights from the consciousness of the spirit the mask invoked. ::
