“the people’s temple” was the name given to the 1970s era doomsday cult led by Reverend Jim Jones of Indiana, which, despite beginning as a movement purporting to be focused on social justice, equality for all and the teachings of Christianity, by 1978 had morphed into a dangerously loyal group of followers willing to murder a US congressman, several journalists and then commit mass suicide, all at the instruction of their faithful leader, Jones.
