Enceladus is the sixth-largest moon of Saturn. Enceladus is mostly covered by fresh, clean ice, making it one of the most reflective bodies of the Solar System. Consequently, its surface temperature at noon only reaches −198 °C (−324 °F), far colder than a light-absorbing body would be.
This extreme cold and hostile environment is the home of the Red Balm Alstroemeria which evolved to withstand the harsh surface environment deep within Enceladus underground caves. Blooming once every five Earth years, the plant glow in bright red emitting powerful magnetic energy and heat to attract silica-based pollinating insects.
