This work depicts Amelia Stewart, one of the Lady Patroness of the influential Almack's, the first and most exclusive mixed-gender social clubs in Regency London. When her husband, a prominent politician who was Britain's leading diplomat during the close of the Napoleonic Wars, committed suicide in 1822, she was blamed by some for his mental illness, but after two years she defied them to return to society.
