Created by Agnes Mary Richards in 1932, Rockhaven Sanitarium was the first of its kind—a mental asylum for women, run by women. This was especially significant at a time when new and dangerous ideas about women’s sanity were taking hold. Rockhaven Sanitarium became known as the "Screen Actors' Sanitarium", housing starlets and others connected to show business. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 2016.
