Lupa Capitolina is the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, the mythical twin founders of Rome. The original bronze sculpture dates back to Etruscan times and the twin boys were added 100's of years later during the Renaissance.
The submissive pose of the anonymous model echoes that of Lupa Capitolina with the hanging breast ready to nurture. However, the watchful pose and glaring eyes of the she-wolf has been obscured behind the tranquil domestic setting. This modern she-wolf no longer a symbol of Rome, but a symbol of Home.
