The Major Arcana, the numbered or named cards of the cartomantic tarot pack, were initially intended for gaming and gambling before occultists bestowed upon them a new meaning. The 18th century saw the rise of their spiritual significance, as the Marquis Stanislas de Guaita established them as a path to spiritual growth. Each Major Arcanum features a scene, often with people and many symbols, in a cartomantic deck. While every tarot deck is unique, most symbols remain consistent.
