To be able to experience a volcanic eruption's birth is something beyond description or words. I can only do my best in pouring that emotion that I felt in that rare moment into this image.
Yesterday, August 3rd, 2022, at around 1pm, word got out that a 500 meter crack in the earth tore open in the Reykjanes Peninsula, spewing out an ocean of magma. After a week of thousands of earthquakes, the magma had finally reached the surface. I packed up my camera gear and sped for the peninsula. After an 8km trek through the mountains and crossing the dried lava field of last year's now dormant volcano, I made it to this scene.
