Medusa is known the world round for being the feared serpent-haired gorgon who terrorized the world of men. But the essence of Medusa's story is that of a virtuous person, used, maligned and hunted despite no wrongdoing of their own. Even in Medusa's demise, her gaze was used to save the day.
Gabriel's reimagining of Medusa follows in the lineage of Caravaggio, offering the moment of her demise as reflected in a shield. But in Gabriel's iteration, Medusa's face is seen with a less macabre tone, to reflect the original innocence of Medusa. In this way both the unseen vestal priestess of Athena and the slayed gorgon are represented in one image.
