Last month John Conway died of COVID-19. The mathematical genius from Cambridge was known for devising the Game of Life, also known simply as Life. Thanks to his work, the use of cellular automata made a spectacular leap. Conway's initial experiments in that field were done with pen and paper, long before personal computers existed.
