This piece is of my beautiful mother who used dance as a form of expression and therapy when she arrived to the US as a refugee from Cambodia. During Cambodia’s genocide (The Killing Fields), the communist regime worked to destroy the arts and those involved. 90% of Cambodian artists perished.
After surviving the genocide, she found the strength to heal through dance. She joined the Royal Ballet of Cambodia but felt unsafe due to the political unrest and took an opportunity to flee Cambodia on foot.
