The challenge

Nazaré is one of the greatest challenges and aspirations for most surfers around the world. A couple stand frozen in time, watching in awe a solitary surfer preparing to adventure into the North Atlantic Ocean. Awaiting him are some of the tallest and fiercest waves in the world, ready to engulf even the bravest and most experienced surfers. This image was taken at Praia do Norte beach, Nazaré, Portugal, in February 2023. Nazaré is home to some of the largest, most treacherous waves on the planet.
