The Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge as seen from the western bank of the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Due to its proximity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, the bridge was designed to withstand not only earthquakes, but floods and tornadoes too. All manner of natural disasters strike this part of the Midwest in regular intervals, and the bridge keeps traffic flowing across the river from Illinois to Missouri. Its cable-stays fan out like wings supporting the bridge deck as it spans over the water, a symbol of strength and resilience to whatever may come.
