"Where are we going, Mom?"
"To the mall," she said.
We did this often
While father was at the office
Searching for a gift for someone's future birthday
Or just wanting to get away from the heat.
At Christmas time
I watched the JCPenney employee
As she wrapped presents with dainty fingers
It hypnotized me into a state of butterfly tummy warmth
So well that I sometimes caught myself drooling.
But on this particular day,
As I played between the clothing racks and displays
Mom was looking for diamonds
She loved diamonds
For the ultimate merge
She hoped would come
Someday.
