Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a polish mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who proposed the heliocentric solar system. In this system he explained for the first time how Earth is a spherical object which rotates around the Sun like all other planets in the Solar System. Up until that time most people believed Earth was the centre of the universe. He shared his findings in the Commentariolus and also in his second book, which he published, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres). For this Copernicus faced a ban on his publications by the Roman Catholic Church decades after his death.
