Epicurus (341 BCE – 270 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher and sage who founded Epicureanism, a highly influential school of philosophy around 307 B.C. The philosophy of Epicureanism teaches that the greatest good is to avoid pain and seek modest and necessary pleasures, which was an opposition to the prevailing Stoicism philosophy of the time. In his ideals, Epicurus goes into depth on the necessity to attain a state of tranquility, freedom from fear ('ataraxia'), and absence from bodily pain ('aponia').
