Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BCE – 44 BCE) was a Roman general and politician, who served many different political positions on his rise to power. Caesar led the Roman legions in the Gallic Wars before defeating Pompey in a civil war and ruling the Roman Republic as a dictator, which was usually supposed to be a temporary position, but he decided to make it for life. While in this position Caesar greatly alienated many other senators, which brought Cassius and Brutus to betray and murder him during a senate meeting. He was a pivotal figure in the events that led to the Roman Republic's fall and the emergence of the Roman Empire.
