NGC 2359 is a glowing cloud of gas and dust located in the constellation Canis Major. In many ways it resembles a viking’s helmet. But when coupled with the bloody clouds of hydrogen gas that surround it, I see a beating heart: the beating heart of the universe.
The nebula is formed by the strong winds and intense radiation from a massive, hot star located at its center. These winds and radiation have blasted away the surrounding material, creating the frothing blue-hot bubbles and octopus-like arms that make up the nebula.
You will also notice a number of smaller, dimmer stars and a series of intricate filaments and tendrils within the heart, helmet, or vessel.
