Ode to Dominican Women- I often thought of merging my current career with my passions a concept that lived in my head rent-free. I thought of making portraits of Dominican women heroes that had an impact on me and my motherland, the Dominican Republic. I spent weeks educating and submerging myself back into my childhood memories and my roots, as well as diving into the country’s history through books, documentaries, articles, and just pure research. I created these characters fictional and non-fictional, while thrifting and finding specific props that were nostalgic & represented the specific time period of that character. I not only modeled but also designed and curated all the aspects of the photographs, from the set design & props to styling of hair & makeup, clothing, to the selection and editing of each photo. My focus is on shedding light and telling the story of our journey, our culture, and the impact of women in our rich history, while also representing women around the globe.

Las Heroínas

This character came to me as a representation of the women I saw everyday in my neighborhood, while living in the Dominican Republic. She's the nosey neighbor that's always in everyone else's business. She says she doesn't like gossip but thrives in it. She likes to look good and have her hair laid. She doesn’t like to spend money, so she spends the day (usually Friday- the start of the weekend) with rolls on to air dry because the hair salon is too expensive. She will give you unsolicited advice and tell you a dramatic story of what can happen if you don't follow her advice. Everyone may call her la chismosa del barrio, but she definitely doesn’t know that.
