i thought i’d used up all the colours

i took all the colours out and spread them around. they took on lives of their own, piled up on each other, clumped, oozed, smeared. i wormed my way between them, squeezed around them, let them part in front of me and seal behind. i thought i’d move past them, but they always got there first.
