Mahatma “Great-Souled” Gandhi is one of the few special people who were able to enact radical change while promoting a non-violent and peaceful revolution called satyagraha. Through his religious doctrine of pacifism, Gandhi led the movement toward Indian sovereignty from the British in the 20th century, finally achieving freedom in 1947. In addition to promoting independence, Gandhi pushed for equality and unification of Hindu-Muslim peoples. This effort would prove to be his final struggle and on January 30th, 1948 he was assassinated by a Hindu extremist.
