Embracing the broken, flawed or imperfect.
I created the images in this series loosely based on the Japanese art of Kintsugi where broken pottery is mended with a lacquer that is mixed with gold.
The philosophy behind it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to hide or disguise.
The idea was to draw a line between cracked ceramics and when we as humans feel broken.
Not only is there no attempt to hide the damage, but the repair is literally illuminated... a kind of physical expression of the spirit of Mushin...
