El Salvador is a country with a population of about 6.9 million located in Central America. The country borders Guatemala to the west and Honduras to the North and East. To the South is the Great Ocean. El Salvador is the country of the American mainland with the highest population density (especially the capital, San Salvador), and is also the most industrialized country in the region. Its official name is the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: República de El Salvador, IPA: [re'pußlika ðe el salßa'ðor]). The country derives from the Spanish word for "Savior" in reference to the Prophet Jesus, and its territory was named Cuscatlán before the Spanish protectorate.
