Background of the conflict:
10 June 2014 - ISIS captured city of Mosul after the Iraqi troops stationed there withdrew.
Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. Thousands of people were left to die en masse. Hundreds of women and children were subjected to torture and rape. Little girls who were left hungry and thirsty and tortured for days were forcibly married to older ISIS militants.
On 9 July 2017, the Iraqi Army backed by US Army announced it had launched a new offensive.
The Iraqi army, which started the ground operation after intense air attacks, captured the city on 21 July.
