In the year 1521, Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition arrived on the coast of what is today the Philippines.
All of the island villages that encountered the captain were compelled to kneel before the Cross of Castile, save one. The Mactan people, led by Lapu Lapu, coordinated an armed resistance, killing Magellan and expelling the Spanish from his island.
This piece evoques the image of the brave leader of Mactan, who has ever since been underestimated in American and European school books. Lapu Lapu is considered to be the first hero of the Philippines for having repelled the European invaders.
