Sprung from an international architecture competition promoted by the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Newspaper,” this highrise is one of the most influential skyscrapers ever constructed. That importance is not primarily due to its Rouen Cathedral-inspired design, but rather to the more than 260 contest entries that poured in from architects around the globe eager for publicity and the $100,000 prize.
