Turquoise, gold, and cerulean blue glazed terracotta tiles sheath this Art Deco landmark that was originally a department store — actually, two department stores under one roof. The four clock faces held special significance for Adolph Sieroty, a Polish immigrant who got his start in L.A. retail when he opened a clock shop.
Bolstered by Sieroty’s willingness to sell on credit, the business grew into Eastern Outfitting, a California chain of furniture and housewares stores. A retail clothing business, Columbia Outfitting, prospered too, and in 1930 Sieroty put both into this flagship store. Entering through th...
