Future Cities #6: Manshiet Nasser #1, Cairo This photograph is from my Future Cities project about informal urban development in the world's cities. These photographs were made between 2010 and 2015. The Mansheit Nasser settlement is home to the Zabbaleen, who earn their living by collecting garbage throughout the city of Cairo. The workers, who are mostly Coptic Christians, have created one of the most efficient recycling systems in the world. They are able to recycle almost 80 percent of the trash they collect, compared to the 20-25 percent recycled by municipal trash collectors in many parts of the world.
