Denial is the inability or unwillingness to surrender to reality. It is hard to think of a more hopeless state. In a nod to The Emperor’s New Clothes, here we have a figure, nude, marching away from the white flag of surrender which represents an acceptance of reality. He is red, representing the fire of his anger and determination to stay on his path. He holds a scepter, and his crown is askew, as he is playing the king of his own show, though it is a sad farce.
