Bhishma had been the supreme commander of the Kuru army. He was wise, noble and brave. He was blessed to live as long as he wanted by his father when he had decided to renounce his claim to the throne and live a life of celibacy. Bhishma was unmatched in warfare skills and his power, might and the boon made him invincible in battles. Bhishma was the grandsire of the Pandavas and Kauravas. Bhishma swore to protect the throne and for keeping this promise, he had to side with the Kauravas in the war. Bhishma fell when he was pierced with thousands of arrows shot by Arjun in the epic battle. He died at will in his bed of arrows few months after the war was over.
