Born in Illinois in 1837, Wild Bill Hickok was a folk hero of the late 1800s. Hickok started his career at the age of 18 by heading west as a fugitive of justice. He became caught up in the conflicts between the lawlessness of Banditti of the Prairie (or Prairie Bandits), groups of loose knit outlaw gangs from the south and vigilantes from the north known as “Regulators”.
Wild Bill worked as a stagecoach driver and later a lawman in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska.
