Bass Reeves, a man born into slavery in Arkansas, gained his freedom during the civil war when he severely beat his owner. Reeves fled into Indian Territory where he lived as a fugitive among the Cherokee, Creeks and Seminoles.
Due to his knowledge of the Indian Territories and ability to speak several Indian languages, Reeves was recruited as a deputy marshal becoming the first black deputy to serve west of the Mississippi River.
