One morning in Kyoto, I was sitting in this beautiful small cafe, run by an older couple who were absolutely lovely. I sat there alone and had what at that time in my life was my favorite breakfast: Coffee and Cigarettes. I sat there with this image in front of me. The perfect morning light billowing in from the large plate glass window next to me, the view of the street outside, and the coffee steam mixing with the cigarette smoke like they were always meant for one another. Gritty and at the same time soft and welcoming. I knew right then I had my shot.
