“It’s Not Just A Phase” features twenty-five 1/1 images of moonrises and moonsets from 2020-2021. During global quarantine, I learned to align myself with the moon in ways I never imagined.

Each photo is a real capture planned months in advance. Countless hours were spent plotting alignments, scouting viewpoints, and shooting all hours of the night. Yet, despite extensive planning, there are no guarantees of getting the shot since Mother Nature makes the final decision. Each capture is a unique combination of light, moon phase, and subject alignment, which may not lineup in the same manner again for years. Ultimately with this collection, I am showcasing beautiful moments that coexist between humanity and nature that can only be seen from the right place at the right time. Freezing these moments in time has become a passion of mine - it’s not just a phase!

This piece features a 2.1% waning crescent moon rising from 2,870 feet away. The conditions and light were perfect for this predawn alignment of the thin crescent moon above the Statue of Liberty torch in New York City. This is one of my favorite phases of the moon because the earthshine illuminates the dark parts.
