Most of my new dog portrait projects are born from either experimenting with my own dog, or just watching him. He’s not alone in that he loves to have his belly rubbed. For a few years, those were some of my favorite portraits to take, looking down on a dog while they are on their back waiting for belly rubs. Most dogs didn’t like doing that with me hovering over them with a camera, so I went back to the drawing board.
The Under Dogs series is literally a twist on that idea. I dreamed up a glass table that I could make, and be strong and safe enough to hold the animals. With every dog that hops up on that table, I never know what I'm going to come away with - and that's the exciting part!
