There are scattered forests of tall, brown stalks. Noxious gases erupt from deep fissures. The furry local animals are able to feed on radioactivity. Their eyes are clustered at the end of long tentacles. There are sudden flashes of light at night, of unclear origin, some say it's Archangel; but nobody knows.
