'Dark skies' are not always as dark as they seem. Sometimes photographs reveal strong atmospheric processes at work, like the gravity waves in the air glow on this Summer night.
Here, at De Smet lake in Wyoming, the air glow layer was illuminated strongly and provided a green hue in every scene. Adding an otherworldly contrast to the red of this fantastic carrot sprite complex, I decided to embrace the colors when editing. Perhaps one day we will fully understand a connection between red sprites and the energy that feeds these other glowing phenomena in the upper mesosphere. There is so much going on up there that just cannot be reached or seen to study.
