“Bon-sai”, also known as 盆栽 in Kanji, is a Japanese term which simply means “planted in a container”. It is an art form derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice known as Penjing, 盆景. However, unlike Penjing which utilizes traditional techniques to produce entire natural sceneries in small pots that mimic the grandiose and shape of real life sceneries, the Japanese bonsai only attempts to produce small trees that forms the shape of real life trees.
