Marka-Dafing people reside in north central Burkina Faso. They migrated into the area from further north, bringing Mande-styled carving with them. They blended ideas about religion and spirituality, economics, education, and farming from the various cultures among whom they resided with.
Marka-Dafing Masks were used at important funerals to honor the deceased member of the family they are associated with. Thus it ushered the spirit into a long journey to the spirit world. Over time, these masks begun to represent ancestors who did good to the society. On these occasions, the masks embody nature or ancestor spirits that interact with human beings and influence their lives.
