In earlier periods of the Akan people, the Akuaba statuette was secured at the back of a barren woman in belief that she would conceive. And they did conceive according to the legend. Prior to this, a barren woman’s husband goes to see the priest of the village. The priest therefore commissions the doll to be made and gives it to the mother to represent the infant, known as the Akuaba and cares for it as if it were alive. The mother then has to eat certain foods and both herself and the husband will have to follow certain direction from the priest.
